A good way to learn how to write a story that’s mainly description and it’s for question 5 of paper one of the AQA GCSE question paper although I’m sure it would fit other examples just as easily so obviously when you’re describing or writing a story you need to have your literary techniques in mind these are the descriptive ones and the reason I’m making a of this pissah right piece of writing is the metaphor in it this writer is absolutely brilliant at using metaphor excuse me and if I just looked at the metaphor I would be giving this 100% and it’s really really very very skilled anyway you need them to know these techniques and to be able to use them yourself in my previous narrative I focused on these seven skills. Ok well first let’s focus on the vocabulary a sliver of breath wisps of smoke his hopes are ephemeral like the Smokies and instead of staring at the platform he eyed at it an unusual word choice so immediately the examiner is pretty impressed with the quality of vocabulary next I keep repeating in my the importance of powerful verbs and look at what he’s done here all she’s done prims got the idea of the breath escaping and then vanishing now why this is so powerful is it works as a kind of metonymy a technique where one thing represents the character so it’s the character who wants to escape and the character who wants to vanish as you will see later in the piece of writing but it’s the breath of this man that’s that’s doing the escaping and vanishing not the man himself.

What Is A Paragraph

A paragraph is several sentences grouped together and each paragraph should relate to one main topic a paragraph is a group of related sentences in other words that develop an idea it is rarely that a paragraph contains a single sentence all that although that also happens but for that you have to first master writing lengthy paragraphs and then want to do something more experimental like writing paragraphs in single sentences otherwise ideally speaking and for exam purposes the best way to write is to write a paragraph is in several sentences the most important principle to observe in a paragraph is its unity by this we mean that each paragraph should consist of a single idea that is what I told you a main idea generally the topic is expressed in the first sentence of a paragraph but there are times when the central idea is seen in the last sentence of a paragraph.

So pay attention if you are particularly if you are reading the first and the last sentence of a paragraph if you are writing you can come straight to the point or bring the punchline in the last sentence of a paragraph a paragraph should have logical sequence of thoughts and ideas which is very clear element a paragraph should have one single topic now look at this paragraph again this is the same paragraph taken from the writing that we have just seen on Newton please look at the slide this is Newton’s life highlighted so what we have done here is who was Newton this is one basic ideas it will give you one central idea who was Newton what did he do major work and his important work and born in this year died in this year look at now this second paragraph please read it I here I want you to identify the main idea and the supporting details for Cardinal Newman the ideal University is a community of thinkers engaging in intellectual pursuits not for any external purpose but as an end in itself and visage in a brew broad liberal education which teaches students to think and to reason and to compare and to discriminate and to analyze.

Look this is a compound sentence but very well written overuse of and doesn’t really hamper the progression of idea here it is an example of good writing Newman held that narrow minds are born of narrow specialization and is stipulated that students should be given a solid grounding in all areas of study a restricted vocational education was out of the question for him somewhat surprisingly he also espoused the view that universities should be entirely free of religious interference putting forward a circular pluralist and inclusive ideal so what is the main idea Carolyn Cardinal Newman’s concept of ideal University and then the remaining paragraphs support that what was an ideal University education for or through the perception of Cardinal new man what was his perception of a great University and good education.

Essay Tips From Oxford Student

So first off is the pre reading now at Oxford we get big long list sometimes up to about books long with pre reading just so you can get an idea of the amount of reader whoo greener thorns I’ve done read of the ones that I couldn’t find or have actually done that purple ombré forgot to change it and often there’s page numbers sometimes it has chapters but a lot of times it has nothing and you have to find the chapter yourself in index of the content and that’s part of the skill really so say my last birthday was on Paleolithic art which is I doing archeology and I had a big fit book about this thick and I had to spend a good minutes looking through all different contents to try and find something that’s specifically on my topic because often the chapters are quite baby names and you have to read a bit giveme debate yourself trying to find it.

So I think that’s the hardest part about the pre reading is finding exactly what you need to do and also the time you have to spend on it because it’s the most time-consuming part for example for this essay I’ve spent two full days in Manchester library while I’ve been home so I still have a lot of work to do so I’m off to the library just reading the books head about yeah probably back nine or ten and two of them I could actually find because they weren’t in the lab where they were only in the body in an Oxford which has every book ever so of course they’d be in there and but I don’t have access to that now and that’s fine and like you said we don’t have to read every book you never have to read every book unless specified because you can write an essay outside but if you back up your points well so yeah.

Well I would say is put a day at least aside maybe two to spend in the library or on your laptop and because a lot of them are online finding the reading finding your research so if you’re doing science it’s all research-based rather than reading mainly I think don’t quote me on Marcus I don’t defect but yeah and also make sure you work down every single page number that you have taken research from because for the first week or so of my essays I completely forgot to do that and have to go back when I was writing it so I could cite the page very annoying I’m much easier if you just do it when you would actually read it okay so what’s my planet okay so so plumbing is with the complete now for plums first I’m going to say is they’ll probably be most important thing you can do when you’re writing a message.

I never ever as I used to plan because I thought too time-consuming I was pretty good at writing an essay on the spot I was naturally quite able to structure my essays but that was before I got to Oxford and everyone is good at doing that so it’s quite a phenomena yet in thrown into a place where once you were always pretty pretty above average.

*DAY 1 STAR CHART—Present a prompt to students and model using the Star Chart. Write the topic of the prompt in the star and list writing topics that respond to the prompt around the star. I tell students that the star has 5 points and that they should stretch themselves to come up with 5 possible writing topics. Model this with your own writing and give them time to talk with a partner about things they could write about as they complete the Star Chart. Use the last 5 minutes of class to share ideas students recorded either as a class or in small groups. (40 minutes)

*DAY 2 ORGANIZATION CHART—Model choosing an idea from your Star Chart to use for writing today. I usually talk about each idea on my Star Chart and think aloud about topic sentences I could write about those ideas. For example, if the prompt was about a special person, I might have 5 people listed. I could talk about a few of the people on my personal Star Chart and two topics about each person that make them special to me. Give students time to do this with a partner. Then, have them circle the idea on their Star Chart that they want to write about. Using an idea from your Star Chart, write a central idea sentence, two topic sentences, then restate your central idea in the circles and boxes of the Organization Chart. Have students do the same while working with a partner to share ideas. Use the last 5 minutes of class to have students share their Organization Charts with the class or in small groups. (40 minutes)

Why Attend Class For Something You Can Research On Your Own Part 1

I recently started a business. I have already been researching information and asking questions for years so I am comfortable to a certain extent going forward but just not satisfied. Besides I am an old pal who knows just enough to know that he never knows enough that he shouldn’t want to learn more from others and get their insight.

I signed up for a class titled, “How To Start Your Own Business”, I went into the class to find out what I didn’t know. A surprising realization was how much I actually do know! But I digress, in less than one class, hearing other people’s question and concerns and thoughts about some of my own questions from them and the instructor was well worth the tuition for the class. I could stop right here……but that wouldn’t be me! 🙂

There are three points that I want to make for people who asks themselves, “why should I take a class about something that I can research myself”. No matter what subject matter you are talking about but especially if your are talking about starting a business or anything business related, you should attend the classes at your local colleges and small business centers/organizations even if you are familiar with the subject matter because….

  1. You don’t know everything. You also don’t know what you don’t know so go find out. Even if you have already been researching the subject, you don’t know what perspective the presenter is going to approach the subject from so what you know (or think you know) doesn’t matter.
  2. You can learn a lot on your own, but what is your time worth?

Instead of researching what questions you should ask and then researching the answers to those questions only to find there are nested questions that must also be research further, you could listen to someone give you a streamlined process that’s useful or relevant to most people.

Supposed then you are allowed to interact with your own questions specific to your needs based on that information? This would eliminate all of your guesswork and at least half (if not more) of your research from jump. You’re taken straight to the meat and potatoes of what you need to focus on to keep moving forward.

What if you are able to use someone else’s years of research, mistakes, experiences, and lessons learned to help you pursue your interests more effectively? The knowledge they have acquired from years of practice and teaching, that isn’t worth $100?

It’s no brainer that you should research a company before your interview.  Job Seekers have to approach the interview armed with knowledge.  You’ll never get the job if the interviewer thinks you are just going through the motions or that you think it’s all about you.  You have to convince them that you know the big picture and that you believe it’s all about the company.   You communicate this by knowing about the company’s achievements, philosophy, and press coverage.  Improving your interviewing skills by building self-confidence and knowledge of the target will make you stand out.

This is where the LinkedIn network you have been building starts to pay off.  Under advanced search, enter the company name with current or past filter included.  First off, you are looking for one of your contacts who worked for the company.  The second tier is to find a contact of a contact and get introduced.  The third tier is to find a LinkedIn Member who is most likely to know the hiring manager, whether you have a connection or not.

The purpose of this effort is to discover things about the interviewer.  What skills will they be focusing in on?  What’s his or her history, in case you have something in common like a college?  What are his or her likes, hobbies, and personal passions? Now, be careful not to sound like a stalker or phisher by asking personal questions that might raise red flags.  Keep family and religion out of the discussion.  Armed with this kind of information, you will enter the interview room with confidence. You will score points and build rapport.  You will stand out.  Connecting with the interviewer is so important.  Delivering information in the style they prefer is key.  Managers’ like to hire people just like themselves.  Thus if the hiring manager is a laid-back jokester, loosen up a bit.

SECRET TIP “Using the third tier.”

Don’t know anyone at the company or have a contact that does?  Cold call someone on the LinkedIn list. You can send them a message via LinkedIn, or Google them to find out contact information.  Do a little quick research on them as well.  “Can you help out a fellow alumnus with some advice?”  Be up front and tell them you have an interview scheduled and want their advice on how to put your best foot forward with the hiring manager.  You will find that since you’re asking their advice, and not trying to sell them something, most people will be pleased to help out the guy or gal trying to get a job.  Years ago, I contacted a fellow who worked for a target company.  He had moved on to work abroad in London.  Nevertheless, he was extremely helpful in sharing insights. I think he was just happy to talk to a Yankee about anything.  Now, be careful not to sound like a stalker or phisher by asking personal questions that might raise red flags.  Keep family and religion out of the conversation.

Don’t get discouraged if the first person you contact isn’t helpful.  Maybe you caught them at a bad time.  Keep trying.  Vary your approach.

How to Write a Good Resume

Here is a large list of ideas for you to keep in mind when preparing that masterpiece also known as your resume!

– Write brief phrases. No need for full sentences

– Treat your first written copy as a first draft. You will likely be revising it and editing it, before it is finalized

– Begin it by summarizing your key skills

– Always include your Name at the very top, and your address, phone number, and email (if necessary) after that. You do not need to type the word “resume” on it

– Be consistent in your resume design-  All dates appear on the right hand side

– Omit unnecessary information, outdated information, and information that may be used to screen you out. The resumes purpose is to shed light on your qualifications for the job.

– Small numbers from 1 to 9 should be spelt out (Ex: “one”, “seven”, “nine”, etc).  Numbers 10 and up can be displayed in their numerical form. (Ex: “12”, “42”, “32000”, etc)

–  Proofread your final resume. Have a someone else look at it as well. They will be able to help you find spelling and grammatical errors.

– Avoid using italics or -dashes-. It confuses the scanning machines.

– Do not use coloured paper, bordered paper, or odd-sized paper. Make your resume look professional in appearance

– Do not include your picture with the resume

– Leave out personal data, marital status, number of children, and statements like “in great health”.

– Devote more space to your recent job positions, and less to your older jobs. Employers want to see the most recent and relevant details of your work history.

– List your job dates as years, rather than by month. Do not leave unexplained gaps between work periods. Provide a brief explanation for them. (Ex: Family responsibilities, left for college, etc…)  

– You should not include grade point averages, or honors awards unless you have recently graduated

– List educational background (College, University, etc.)

– Always include a cover letter explaining why you submitted the resume.


5 Bad Attitudes In Job Interviews, And How To Avoid Them

#5. Negative

People like to be surrounded by positive people. You may hate your existing job or your boss, but whining is not appropriate at all in interviews. Also, complaints kill conversations. Don’t do it.

#4. Repetitive

Some people repeat themselves without knowing it. What you can do is to videotape the 2-3 minute sales pitch of yourself and see how you do. If you have the tendency to repeat, it will show.

If the interviewer doesn’t seem to get what you said, move on. Either the conversation gets boring and he zooms out, or it’s not interesting enough to get a noticeable response. Repeat what you just said will double the damage.

#3. Unenthusiastic

Real story:

Me: Why are you interested in our firm?

Candidate: Well, I saw a posting on the career board and you know, why not give it a try.

If you show this level of enthusiasm, you might as well not show up.

You don’t need to remember the name of the CEO and the year the firm was established, but at least research on basic information e.g. the spelling and proper pronunciation of the company’s name, brief history, field of specialty and its competitors. No excuse not to do it in this age of the Internet.

Also, think hard on how you can fit into the firm and the industry in general. For example, if you are interviewing for an accounting position in a hospital, in additional to demonstrating your ability as an accountant, it is very helpful to show an interest (better yet,  a passion) in working in the healthcare industry.

#2. Not Trustworthy / Dishonest

I always ask my readers to give their experience a positive spin, or to reframe the experience to better reflect what the company is looking for.

Note that while repackaging or even some exaggeration is fine, an out-right lie is not. Ethics and integrity is the core of accountancy. On a practical note, it is difficult to keep lying as the conversation builds on after several rounds of interviews.

#1. Brash, Arrogant and Downright Stupid

Imagine an accountant holding a can of Pepsi when pitching for business at Coca Cola. No one would be stupid enough to do anything close to that right?. You will be surprised.

When I worked at Morgan Stanley, I once interviewed a senior in college who brought along a Goldman Sachs bag to show off. I remember he had good grades and presented himself quite well, but nothing could have changed my first (and very bad) impression of him.

The Bottom Line

  1. Be Likable. Think of the most popular professionals you met in the current job. What are they like? Why are they well liked?
  2. Be Confident. Be well prepared with a unique story, then present in a way that is both friendly and professional.

General Rules

  1. Short Answer Please

Provide an interesting and informative answer in 2-3 minutes.

Your Story

  1. The Beginning

This is the introduction where you give a general idea of who you are. Everyone knows how to do this, but few do it well enough to give a good first impression.

The Wrong Way:

Keep talking forever about your life and get interrupted by the interviewer because it either gets too long or too boring. You end up not talking about the important points, and you lose control over what the interviewer is going to ask you in the next question.

The Right Way:

Make a short and factual  introduction of the essentials, in 2-3 sentences only:

  • Where you are from, where you went to school, and your major/concentration at school
  • Major and relevant experience before current job (optional, only if you don’t have enough to say)
  • Current job or situation

You will talk about the whys in the next step of the framework.

  1. The Spark

This is the place to state why you are interested in accounting. Most people get into the industry because it is somewhat prestigious and make decent money, parents thought it’s a stable job, they are good at numbers (or not  good with people)

Whatever the reason might be, it is likely not to be that interesting and hundreds of candidates before you said exactly the same thing.

  1. The Development

This section talks about how your spark is developed into a career choice in accounting. If you are an accounting student, talk about why you chose the specific school/accounting program and what you have learned.

If you have some experience (internships, volunteer work, jobs in accounting, jobs outside of accounting), then go through them in chronological order, highlighting what you have learned in each stage of your career.
